An audio or sound recording tool is vital as it can be used to voice over a clip or perform other tasks. Even so, recording audio with Ubuntu is a constant topic of discussion. There have been a few tools that can help you do this quickly, but an integrated system cannot record audio. Open your Ubuntu 20.04 system and log in from it. You’ll need to open your command shell via Ctrl + Alt + T as we need to work on the command line to install a sound recorder tool or program.
Install audio recorder with PPA
After the terminal shell opens, we need to add the PPA (Personal Package Archive) repository in Ubuntu20.04. Hence we need to use the sudo apt command in the shell to add the PPA library for further installation of the audio recorder. So try the following command in the shell and press Enter:
$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:audio-recorder
Within the execution process we get the following output saying that you can update and install the latest version of the audio recorder by trying the ppa commands given below.
Now you can also use the following command to use PPA to load the latest version of the audio recorder onto your system.
$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:audio-recorder/ppa
In between the installation process, the system prompts you to continue the process by pressing the Enter key. So press Enter to continue installing the audio recorder, otherwise press Ctrl-C to exit.
It starts with the installation of the ppa archive repository for the audio recorder.
Let’s update the apt and the system with the following command in the shell to apply the changes in the Ubuntu 20.04 system.advertising
$ sudo apt-get -y update
After the system has been updated and the PPA has been successfully added, let’s install an audio recorder with the following apt command in the shell as follows:
$ sudo apt-get install audio-recorder
The system starts with the installation and configuration of the audio recorder in our system. The final lines for completing the installation process are shown in the screenshot below.
In order to remove the installed audio recorder from your system, you must use the apt query given below, followed by the keyword “remove” it contains.
$ sudo apt remove audio-recorder
Start the audio recorder
Open the installed audio recorder in your system via the activity area. Click the activity area. The search bar will open. Click on it and enter sound recorder. Press Enter to find the installed tool. You will get the following output. Double click on the “Audio Recorder” to start it.
After the audio recorder has started, the following window will open. Click the Start Recording button to start audio recording.
Whenever you press the Stop Recording button, the tool will start recording audio and the green signal will be displayed. You can say anything to include it.
You can also apply the timer to your recording if you want to record the sound for a specific time. In the following screen you can edit the start and end time of a recording.
You can edit the audio settings from the user interface using the following control panel. You can change the audio format in the Format section.
You can check the “Additional settings” of the audio recorder in the following field. You can change the default location and filename format of an audio file using the Folder Name and Filename Format options.
Whenever you want to clarify something on the display or add audio to a video, you need to record audio. The method described above is suitable for all Ubuntu computers, so you can apply it to multiple versions of Ubuntu.
