Tor Browser is a customized version of Firefox that routes web traffic through the Tor network, making it private and anonymous.
When you surf the Internet with the Tor browser, the connection to the website you are viewing is encrypted and protected from network monitoring and traffic analysis. However, there are some drawbacks to using Tor Browser. Internet browsing through Tor is slower than a normal Internet connection, and some large websites block Tor users. Additionally, Tor is illegal in some countries or is blocked by the government enforced firewall.
This article describes how to use the Tor web browser
on Ubuntu 04/20. The same instructions apply to any other Debian-based distribution.
Install Tor Browser Launcher
The easiest way to install the Tor browser on Ubuntu Linux is to use the Tor browser launcher script. This script downloads and automatically installs the latest version of the Tor browser and adds the application launcher icon.
The torbrowser-launcher package is included in the standard Ubuntu repositories, but it may not always be the latest version. We install the package from the Project supervisor
Run the following commands as a user with sudo privileges:
Add the Tor browser launcher PPA repository:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:micahflee/ppa
Install the Tor browser launcher package:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install torbrowser-launcher
Using the Tor Browser
The Tor browser can either be accessed from the command line by typing. to be started
torbrowser-launcher or by clicking the Tor Browser Launcher icon (Activities -> Tor Browser).
When you first start the launcher, it will download the Tor browser and all other dependencies.
Once the browser is downloaded, the Tor Network Settings window will appear.
The default configuration is sufficient for most users. If your ISP censors Tor, see how to configure the network here
As soon as you click the “Connect” button, the browser connects to the Tor network and starts.
The standard browser installation comes with several security enhancements such as HTTPS Everywhere and NoScript and does not store any browsing history. It is highly recommended not to install any additional add-ons or plugins as this could bypass Tor or compromise your privacy.
The Tor Browser updates automatically when a new version is released.
Uninstall Tor Browser
If you want to uninstall the Tor browser, remove the installed package with the following command:
sudo apt remove torbrowser-launcher
We showed you how to install the Tor browser on your Ubuntu 20.04 desktop. You can now safely and privately surf the Internet and access websites that your local Internet service provider may have blocked.
