is a popular text and source code editor for web and software development. It’s very fast and has a lot of powerful features. The application can be expanded and customized by installing new plugins and creating custom settings.

This article explains how to install Sublime Text 3 on Ubuntu 20.04. Installing Sublime on Ubuntu is pretty straightforward. We activate the Sublime repository, import the GPG key of the repository and install the editor. The same instructions should work for any other Debian-based distribution.

Sublime Text is a proprietary application. It can be downloaded and evaluated free of charge. However, you need to purchase a license if you are going to use it continuously. There is no mandatory deadline for evaluation.

Install Sublime Text 3 on Ubuntu 20.04

Perform the following steps as root or user with sudo privileges to install Sublime Text 3 on Ubuntu:

  1. Install the dependencies required to add a new repository over HTTPS:

    sudo apt updatesudo apt install dirmngr gnupg apt-transport-https ca-certificates software-properties-common
  2. Import the repository’s GPG key and Sublime APT repository into your system’s software repository list by typing:

    curl -fsSL | sudo apt-key add -sudo add-apt-repository "deb apt/stable/"
  3. Once the repository is activated, install Sublime Text 3 by typing:

    sudo apt install sublime-text

That’s it, you have Sublime Text 3 installed on your Ubuntu 20.04 desktop and you’re ready to use it.

When a new version is released, you can update the Sublime package through your standard desktop software update tool.

Start Sublime Text

You can either start the Sublime Text Editor from the terminal by pressing subl or by clicking on the Sublime icon (Activities -> Sublime):
